Listen to John Lennon

BrownTrout is pleased to share the approved 2016 licensed calendar title “John Lennon.” The new calendar embraces the music persona and spirit of John Lennon, while the cover displays Lennon’s dedication to peace and anti-war activism. The significance behind the “Listen to This Button” is rooted in the popular campaign for Lennon's number one solo album “Wall & Bridges.” Most are familiar with his music achievements through the Beatles, arguably the most influential and beloved rock bands in the twentieth century. After the breakup of the Beatles, Lennon transitioned into a solo career, further proving his stand-alone status as an artist, by creating his critically-acclaimed single “Imagine.” The single was listed as #3 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “All-Time Best Songs” list. Just before his last solo album “Double Fantasy,” Lennon was killed at age 40, ending the music legend’s life and career prematurely. Known as one of the most brilliant musicians of our time, John Lennon’s influence still resonates with old and young generations alike, demonstrating the John Lennon calendar as a must-have for any dedicated fan.

Iron Maiden’s Legacy Lives On

A calendar perfect for any dedicated Iron Maiden fan, BrownTrout received approval for the Iron Maiden 2016 calendar. For over 40 years, Iron Maiden has been dedicated to their fans by creating music embodying a spirit of fearlessness and creative independence. Yet again, the band is on tour, making its rounds throughout the U.S. The tour has taken flight since their new album "Book of Souls" (their 16th studio album) and the reviews have been positive. Originally, the band was founded by Steve Harris in the mid 70’s, and a decade later, their fame skyrocketed through a third album called “The Number of the Beast” in 1982. The band went through a world wind of success for about a decade, with a string of seven studio albums, one live album, and seven World Tours. After a temporary breakup, in the late 90’s the band turned their music careers around, with the album “Brave New World” in 2000. This ultimately led to their first ever Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the song “El Dorado,” further proving their endurance and strength as a rock band. Their upcoming 2016 tour will include six of seven continents and 35 countries.

Watch out for “Attack on Titan”

"Attack on Titan," a new 2016 title for BrownTrout, is not your ordinary manga series of comics. This cult favorite in Japan has found its way to North America, while becoming a favorite for many die-hard comic fans. The manga series (Japanese comics in anime) was originally created by Hajime Isayama. The setting for the comics is an alternate universe and post-apocalyptic world, dominated by human-eating monsters called Titans. The comics continue to be successful, considering there are 50 million copies in print of the manga series today. Moreover, the manga series has been developed into a 25-episode series in anime, and now, it's distributed in North America, considering the series' success in Japan. The popularity of the show is prevalent with the debut of a two-part movie based on the manga series. The first part was released on September 30, followed by part 2, released in US theaters on October 20- only a few weeks following part 1.

The app overlaps the real world with “Pokémon,” while connecting players to other app users. This allows the world of “Pokémon” to be shared amongst people across the globe.  Conveniently, this can be downloaded as an app via Google Play Store on androids and for the iPhone via the App Store. The highly anticipated game should be released sometime in 2016.

Grab a Beer or Pour a Glass of Wine with Uncorked and I Love Beer

With BevMo!, Liquor Barn and other liquor retailers in mind, BrownTrout developed Uncorked and I Love Beer, two new wall calendars for 2016. Uncorked appeals to wine lovers who appreciate the beauty and basics of wine, but don’t care to be a connoisseur. The calendar features a varietal each month, ranging from Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc to Chardonnay and Chianti, and offers pairing tips, wine trivia, as well as a beautiful design for the right wall.

Holly Goldsmith (Senior Designer, Core Team) describes BrownTrout's Uncorked Calendar: "The design, with its bright colors and quirky typography—including the popped “O” on the cover title treatment—is elegant yet playful, conveying that learning and understanding wine is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy. Every month, in a graphic box reminiscent of a wine-label, we’ve placed varietal information and food-pairing suggestions, and there is also a small Wine-Chat box containing interesting wine-related tidbits. Flanking each monthly image is a thoughtful quote, in a fresh funky font, to the continuing theme."

On the flip side, I Love Beer was created with a "man's man" and "his cave" in mind. Filled with bar banter quotes, beer jokes and little-known-beer-facts, I Love Beer is the perfect calendar gift. Holly Goldsmith also commented on this title: "With dark, distressed backgrounds, a deep color palette, and close-up images of golden foaming beer, the design has the feel of your favorite grunge bar; you can almost smell the hops and feel the sawdust under your feet."

“Amy” Documentary Shines Light on Amy Winehouse

“Amy”, a new documentary, directed by Asif Kapadia, recently debuted in theaters. It reveals the tragic and inspiring story of the young British musician and songwriter Amy Winehouse. The famous contralto singer was known for her career-changing single “Rehab," along with top charting hits “Back To Black” and “You Know I’m No Good."

Not only does the film reveal the tragedy of her career as a gone-too-soon singer, but also depicts how the singer handled personal struggles, such as depression, bulimia, substance abuse, and ultimately leading to her untimely death at only 27 years old.

The movie is produced by Universal Music U.K., and has been well received by critics. The film delves into a different Amy Winehouse outside of the public eye, before the chaos of fame and media came tumbling down on her.

Entertainment Weekly’s article interviewed Asif Kapadia about the film and he explained: “Generally, people had a negative opinion of Amy Winehouse. She was a joke. Now people see the film and they’re changing their tune.”

When the film debuted on July 3, it received positive reviews from critics, in part due to its well-crafted use of footage from Winehouse’s family and friends’ videos, as well as videos from personal cell phones.

According to an article in Variety, Tony Bennett once insisted that Amy Winehouse’s memory should be preserved in the company of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. The film continues to be successful and resonates with audiences, further proving Amy Winehouse’s relevancy today; even four years after her death. Following its limited release, the film can be seen worldwide.

BrownTrout is the official publisher of the Amy Winehouse 2016 calendar.

R5 Hitting the Stage with “Sometime Last Night” Tour

Proving to be a huge hit, R5, debuted on Billboard’s Pop Album Chart at the #1 spot and #6 on the Billboard 200, with their new album “Sometime Last Night.” The album also debuted on iTunes’ top ten, following the success of their debut album, “Louder,” which climbed to No.1 on iTunes. R5 is one of the latest calendar licenses acquired by BrownTrout.

The band is comprised of American songwriters and musicians, including siblings Ross Lynch (Lead/vocalist/rhythm, guitarist), Riker (bass/vocals), Rocky (lead guitar/vocals), and Rydel (keyboard/vocals), along with friend Ellington “Ratliff" (drummer/vocalist). For their second new album “Sometime Last Night," the group collaborated with producer Matt Wallace and songwriter Savan Kotecha, who also wrote for pop stars Ariana Grande, Ellie Goudling, and The Weeknd. Ross Lynch and the rest of the band, are considered Disney Artists, with Lynch playing in Disney’s “Austin and Ally” on the Disney Channel.

In an interview with radio.com, R5 talked about their songwriting experiences, and how their hit song “Sometime Last Night” came about. The band had their second album completed, but decided to start from scratch. In the end, it worked to their benefit. “We went to the label and we were like, ‘Let’s scrap it all, and we’re gonna write a new one.’ So we would write a song, and if it was better than the one that we had on a previous record, [we’d use it]. We kept writing and crossing older songs off, and sooner or later, we had 'Sometime Last Night',” said Lynch.

So far, the band has been successful with their new music video for their single “All Night," with 1 million hits within its first week. Premiering on July 8, the video was filmed at the Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles.

R5’s tour “Sometime Last Night” began July 7 in Orange Park, Florida and will end March 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The tour will be hitting a total of 75 cities.
