This week BrownTrout is very proud to announce the release of the 2014 Emblem 3 wall calendar, in 12" x 12" and 7" x 7" mini formats. The talented young trio, consisting of Wesley Stromberg, Keaton Stromberg, and their best friend Drew Chadwick, have had a tremendously successful 2013, bringing a laid-back and fun California style to the global pop scene.
Originally from Sequim, Washington, E3 first wowed audiences with an original song written by Chadwick, 'Sunset Blvd', for their audition on the second season of X-Factor. They finished fourth and by the end of the season had captivated the attention of viewers and judges alike. Their debut album, entitled "Nothing to Lose," was released this summer. The calendar's cover image shows the tallest trees in the world, the beautiful coast redwoods. The coastal fog and resulting growth of lichens give the trunks a more grayish color, but they are closely related to the largest tree species by weight, the giant sequoia or Sierra redwood. These are the trees you have most likely driven your car through if you have visited Yosemite. California's White Mountains are home to a third superlative: the oldest living organism in the world is a 5,063 year-old bristlecone pine.

Because of the plate tectonics of the west coast, almost the entire length of the state has mountain ranges, from the rocky coastal cliffs of Monterey and Big Sur to the snowy Sierra Nevada range on the California-Nevada border. This latter range contains Mt. Whitney, which at 14,505 feet is the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states. Just below these mighty peaks there are foothills and oak-dotted grasslands, which provide habitats for a great many animal species', of which coyotes and California condors are just a couple examples.

Although California contains many climates, the southern part of the state is forever associated with its vast deserts, such as the Mojave and Sonoran. Since first grabbing our attention as one third of Destiny's Child, one of the most popular and best-selling girl-groups of all time, Beyoncé Knowles has gone on to a stellar solo career. Independent, powerful, and beautiful, maybe what's most impressive about Beyoncé, a.k.a. Sasha Fierce, is her sheer talent and ability to move easily among different roles. A singer-songwriter with 17 Grammy awards, dancer, actress, creator of her own fragrance, and now mother, she has shown that she can do it all!
Originally from Houston, Beyoncé (born Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter) got her start at a young age participating in local talent contests, once winning over children twice her age. She continued singing in high school and in local choirs before hooking up with childhood friends to form Girl's Tyme, which would later become Destiny's Child. The group saw their breakout success with their second album, 'The Writing's on the Wall,' with songs like 'Say My Name' receiving major airplay. During a hiatus with the group, she released her first solo album, 'Dangerously in Love,' which sold 11 million copies.
Following the disbanding of Destiny's Child, Knowles expanded into acting, appearing in films like Dreamgirls and The Pink Panther (and who could forget her in Austin Powers: Goldmember?) She married rap-mogul and producer Jay-Z, with whom she know has a little girl named Blue Ivy. Whether it's her entrepreneurial spirit, releasing fashion and perfume lines, or her support of causes such as empowerment of women and non-violence, this beautiful and talented star is here to stay.
Built to impress (and sometimes inspire fear), castles to me are the epitome of historical majesty, mystery and power. They are the site of battles, intrigue, royal backstabbing and of course fabulous wealth. But what is a castle exactly? Most scholars consider it to be a fortified private home for a medieval lord. So it is distinct from both a palace, which is not fortified, and other kinds of forts, which were not always a private residence. We all know one when we see it, and it always conjures up images of dashing knights, beautiful maidens in lavish clothing, and, who knows, maybe even a dragon or two!
For this fantastic calendar we have collected images of some of the most stately, imposing and mysterious castles from throughout Europe. Here we see England’s Leeds Castle, which was built on islands in the center of a lake. Its shrouded location matches its deep and storied history, almost as old as England itself. The castle even has a connection to America: it contains a commemorative sundial telling the time in Belvoir, Virginia, with a corresponding sundial in that city.
The Rocca Calascio in Abruzzo, Italy also has a striking location. As a rocca, or mountaintop fort, it sits at 4,790 ft. Personally I would not want to climb a mountain and then have to lay siege to a castle, and apparently neither did anyone else: the fort was never tested in battle. Damage to the structure is the result of a major earthquake in 1461; it was never repaired, most likely also due to its extreme location.
These castles serve as a testament to another era, when terrifying battles raged and a lucky few could protect themselves inside these mighty fortresses. But I think what makes them the most mysterious and ghostly is that they now sit empty, and we will never know all the secrets of the people who built and defended them.
